GREATER STILLWATER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE / PRESS RELEASE Chamber Celebrates the Groundbreaking of Erickson Plaza. Julie Schmolke cut the ribbon at the Chamber ribbon cutting celebration on June 26th, 2025.
Stillwater, MN. The Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce was honored to celebrate a special milestone with Ascension Episcopal Church on June 26, 2025, during a heartfelt ribbon cutting ceremony. The celebration marked both the rich history of the church and the exciting launch of a new community space: Erickson Plaza.
Julie Erickson Schmolke had the honor of cutting the ribbon, joined by Father Jay Phelan, members of the Erickson family, devoted parishioners, and representatives from the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce, including ambassadors and staff.
Founded in 1846, Ascension Episcopal Church is proud to be the oldest Episcopal church in Minnesota. For nearly two centuries, it has served as a pillar of faith, generosity, and community leadership in the St. Croix Valley. From donating land to establish the Stillwater Public Library, to supporting critical needs today, Ascension has long been a catalyst for local progress and connection, championing nonprofits, public service organizations, and charitable causes.
At the heart of this ribbon cutting was the unveiling of Erickson Plaza, a transformative new space that will turn a scenic lawn into a gathering place of harmony and purpose. With native plantings and a breathtaking view of the St. Croix River, the thoughtfully designed stepped terrace will provide a welcoming and peaceful area for neighbors, visitors, and the broader community to come together for connection, care, and celebration.
As shared during the ceremony, Ascension’s congregation believes that a church is far more than its walls. It is a living expression of people, land, service, and spirit, a place where values are lived out through outreach, inclusivity, and a heartfelt commitment to the common good.
The Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce celebrates Ascension Episcopal Church not only for its historical significance but for its enduring role as a beacon of service and community connection in the St. Croix Valley.
