Artist Sue Hedin Presents ?Pieces of Silk? at the Stillwater Public Library
-
The Stillwater Public Library Gallery is showing Sue Hedin’s “Pieces of Silk” quilted artwork during July and August. An artist reception will be held Thursday, August 21st from 6pm to 8pm in the gallery.
Throughout her childhood in Minnesota, Hedin worked with needle and thread. She became a Stillwater resident in the 1980s; around the same time she became involved in quilting. Her quilts have been displayed locally and nationally, and one is currently in the digital collection of the Library of Congress representing Minnesota.
“Pieces of Silk” is a collection of smaller contemporary works displaying a variety of traditional quilting techniques, including simple piecing, appliqué and reverse appliqué, as well as experimentation such as folding and overlapping pieces. The geometric shapes are sewn in dupioni silk, a textile woven with different threads to create an iridescence and texture. The circular shapes in this collection are inspired by Buddhist and Hindi mandalas among other global textile traditions.
Accompanying her wall pieces are several small pyramids made from a pattern for book weights in the book Bibliocraft by Jessica Pigza. “The design and size suited my style,” said Hedin, “and also seemed fun and apt for a library.”
Hedin’s show will be on display in the Stillwater Public Library Gallery through August. The artist reception on August 21st is free and open to the public.Images
